Whitechapel, in the heart of London’s East End contains many people who, because of ethnic, economic and cultural factors, are often excluded from participating in sports. PTEa’s brief was to design high quality sports facilities in a welcoming building. In particular, it was to appeal to members of the Asian community, especially women, as well as be accessible to people with disabilities.

This award-winning centre, completed in 1998, comprises a women-only fitness area, an all-weather pitch, general fitness and training provision, a multi-purpose hall and social areas, including a café and a crèche. All the facilities are at ground level, with a central spine giving direct access to the major areas.
