In 1982 PTEa was commissioned to prepare feasibility studies for the 12 acres of land between Tower Bridge Road and St Saviour’s Dock. This followed PTEa’s successful conversion of New Concordia Wharf downstream.
Eldon House (an associated PTE company) and Jacobs Island Company then purchased part of the area, the 4.75 acre Courage Brewery Site.
The proposals provided for residential, retail, office, light industrial and leisure use. The masterplan revealed an opportunity to unpick the old street and alley patterns and ease the conversions of surviving 19th century buildings creating a new landscaped square.
The main developer was then able to sell off self-contained parcels of the site, including the Anchor Brewhouse, with cross-undertakings for adjacent development and centralised car parking.
